Evaluating Air in Building simulation models made with E-quest

Types of fresh air:

  • Mechanical ventilation- Fans moving outside air indoors.
  • Exhaust driven ventilation -Exhaust fans displacing air in room, and requiring air displaced to be made up from:
    • adjacent zones whose HVAC units have a fresh air component.
    • air cracks in envelope (common residential strategy)
  • Natural infiltration -
    • Wind penetration
    • Stack effect
    • Buoyancy displacement

E-quest Notes:

  • Models generated with wizard often have infiltration schedules of air into the building coordinated with exhaust fan schedules, occupancy schedules, winter/summer periods, core/shell characteristics of zone, residential or office type configurations taken into account.  The interaction between these many factors and why wizard models do this remains not understood.  (future research DOE-2 library origins)

Types of air as defined in E-quest:  (Taken from the Doe-2 library)

INF-METHOD

  • NONE  -No infiltration is calculated.
  • AIR-CHANGE -The infiltration rate is calculated using the air-change method as described below for keywords AIR-CHANGES/HR and INF-FLOW/AREA. One of these keywords should be specified if INF-METHOD=AIR-CHANGE. AIR-CHANGES/HR will give an infiltration rate that depends on wind speed. INF-FLOW/AREA will give an infiltration rate that does not depend on wind speed.
  • RESIDENTIAL-The infiltration rate will depend on both wind speed and inside-outside temperature difference as described below for keyword RES-INF-COEF.
